In the 1970s, Martin Flanagan played 120 games in the Southern Tasmanian Amateurs B division, possibly the lowest standard of adult football then being played. He captain-coached a team that nearly won a grand final and still sees replays of the match in his head. He has written a series of books on Australian football, a play that was performed at the Malthouse theatre, a film treatment on the father of Australian Rules, Tom Wills, and innumerable articles for the Melbourne Age between 1985 and 2017.
